Mindfulness and physical activity go hand in hand. Many people use sport to clear their minds and the actual type of sport is irrelevant as long as you get out of your head and into the flow. .

The ultimate form of mindfulness is meditation. Meditation in that conventional sense - sitting on a pillow crossed legs under a tree is not the only way! Hurrah I hear you say ! In fact Osho the wise Indian spiritual guru talks about how for high energy types this approach is futile. He prescribes running, swimming and dancing or any act whereby the mind, body and spirit work in unison and the distractions of the outside world are silenced. He didn’t mention skiing but I’m pretty sure it’s the same. .

In fact Osho said this traditional notion is too rigid and meditation is actually available to all.  The method you should adopt depends on your energy level - whatever it is you love to do where your body, mind and spirit function together in a rhythm. .

You see this in children through play; where self consciousness and self judgement ceases but as adults the internal dialogue starts to turn up the volume and actual play is remarkably reduced. So whether you choose skiing, swimming, drawing, dancing or running it doesn’t matter as long as it’s your way of silencing the mind. It’s very similar to the notion of Flow by Csikszentmihaly who argues this ‘play’ like absorption is the secret to happiness. .

There is an overwhelming amount of anxiety created by the overflowing inbox of modern life and this reassuringly means we all have a type of meditation available to us…...… find what works for you and lose yourself in the flow this half term.

Ocean views generate a sense of calm. Research shows that those who live by the coast have better physical and mental health. The sound of the waves can activate the parasympathetic nervous system which promotes relaxation. You can easily slip into a meditative state which can actually change the frequency of your brain waves. The Victorian’s knew about the healing sea air. As early as the 1700s, doctors were prescribing trips to the shore or stays at “bathing hospitals” for ailments ranging from depression to tuberculosis. Not only is the sea air almost completely free from exhaust fumes and soot particles. The climate by the sea is especially curative to the respiratory organs and the skin, in addition it improves circulation and strengthens the body’s defences. .

Sea air contains tiny droplets of seawater enriched with salt, iodine, magnesium and trace elements. Magnesium depletes the stress response allowing you to take a hiatus from urban life and restore your mind to a new level. The goal was to create a ‘man of action’. In France in 1913 PE the ‘Herbetist’ way was a based on the concept; “BE STRONG TO BE USEFUL”. Pupils were not taught about aesthetics but about acquiring skills and physiological adaptations so they could be CAPABLE.

Natural human movement comprises locomotive skills such as walking, running, balancing, jumping, crawling, climbing, or swimming; manipulative skills such as lifting, carrying, throwing, and catching; and combative skills such as striking and grappling. These are evolutionary ways of movement that we must replicate to keep ourselves physically competent. .
